Seed to Ceremony
It’s been hard to put into words the experience of working with these two for their wedding flowers last year. They were dream clients! Not only were they excited about locally grown flowers, they wanted to be part of the process. When S & C reached about about hiring us for their wedding, they asked if they could come volunteer at the farm on one of their visits to Moab the Spring before their October wedding. Of course our response was “Hell yes!” They are gardeners and creatives themselves, plant lovers and just all around great humans. We made plans for a day in June and they joined me in one of the gardens, trellising the young dahlia plants, pinching the giant marigolds to encourage more stems and stronger plants, and mulching with alfalfa to promote water conservation, feed the soil and keep it cool over the Summer. They touched many of the plants that later became major parts of their designs. We had lunch after and chatted about flowers, our cats and all the things.
We had fun over the next months planning the designs, which were drawn from a beautifully curated and flower focused color palette that Sophie dreamed up. On wedding day we were able to showcase a variety of the dahlias that we had growing, the precious and funky nerine and gloriosa lilies, SO many giant golden marigolds and strawflowers hanging from the iron arches, our favorite zinnia and celosia varieties, plus some locally grown bells of ireland and California orange (!!) oncidium orchids. The bridesmaids wore different colors that made up the palette and had monochromatic single ingredient bouquets to complement. The groomsmen rocked all black suits with botonnieres featuring funky textures in a variety of tones from the palette.
Sierra Howard Photo captured the day beautifully and we all could feel the love surrounding this couple in the people and the flowers.
We talk about Farm to Table in the restaurant world and there is a growing push to seek out knowledge of where our food comes from and how it is grown. My hope for the future is that the floral world will follow suit. Working with this couple reaffirmed that this hope is not unfounded. My dear friend and amazing florist Stu of Bria Studios uses the term “Seed to Ceremony.” This was truly one of those moments and I was grateful to be part of their celebration.
