Meet Jess!

Jess Oldham grew her first garden in her parents backyard when she was 16. She dreaded weeding, now it is her nightly activity of choice. She has been growing food in some capacity ever since.

In college, Jess studied global environmental studies. The more she learned about our issues as a planet, the more she saw the need for stronger communities where food and cut flowers are produced locally and with the greater environment in mind.

Moab, Utah is her home. This little oasis in the desert has a strong history of agriculture and fruit production. This small town is teeming with backyard gardeners whom Jess am grateful to learn from, work with and hopefully share some inspiration.

Jess is happiest when there is dirt under her fingernails and she is clipping flowers in the first morning light.

This journey into back yard farming has evolved Jess’s own space into a micro flower farm. Jess finds incredible joy in growing flowers and sharing blooms with others. Plus, there would be no fruits and vegetables without flowers. At Farm Yard we specialize in beautiful, unique flower varieties and arrangements (no two bouquets are alike) using only what is available locally, seasonally and without destroying pollinator habitat.

We love the phrase “micro farm” because when we zoom out and think about a healthy planet, we picture tiny little farms dotting the globe, feeding and providing joy to our communities.

We grow our flowers using regenerative, low-impact practices designed to work in harmony with the local desert ecosystem. The farm prioritizes locally grown and responsibly foraged blooms to reduce transportation emissions while creating waste-conscious floral designs. Soil health is strengthened through on-site compost, manure, mulch, crop rotation, cover cropping, and companion planting, helping naturally manage pests and support biodiversity. Water is conserved with drip irrigation, mulch, rainwater harvesting, and climate-appropriate plant selection, while pollinator-friendly species further enhance ecosystem resilience — resulting in seasonal arrangements with the lowest possible environmental impact.

Our goals.

We dream about a day when everyone with a yard will confidently be producing food and flowers in some capacity. We dream that food normally being wasted will be preserved and distributed. We want to connect growers in local communities. We are excited for the day when everyone will view their own space as a path to sustainability. We believe growing food and flowers requires collaboration over competition.

Our current global agricultural system is broken, but it is changing. We believe that growing food and flowers should be done close to home in engaged communities and by working with natural systems as much as possible. Our growing techniques focus on building healthy soil using on-site compost, manure, mulch, crop rotation and cover cropping. We love companion planting for pest control and soil health and use lots of plants to attract pollinators. We promote water conservation by using drip irrigation, mulch and rain water harvesting.

We want you to farm your yard Too.

The best fertilizer is the footsteps of the farmer.” -Japanese Proverb

The best way to grow your own food and support those doing this work is to observe. To interact. To give the valuable gift of time. We want to support you in that endeavor. Whether you have two potted herb plants in your kitchen or a half acre of vegetables in the yard, we want to support you.

We encourage, educate and empower backyard gardeners and small scale farmers through demonstrations of gardening techniques, installation of new food growing spaces, planning and consultation. We preserve produce. We revive backyard fruit production through installation of new fruit trees, revitalization of old fruit bearing trees, pruning services and education.
