Lush greenery meets desert at Red Earth Venue
When Val of Tellurian Events reached out about doing florals for Tina and Matt’s day she described the design as bringing Baja to the Red Earth Venue in the Moab desert. We wanted to highlight the desert oases that exist here with greenery and bring in potted cactus and succulents to still have desert vibes. The design was a welcome pivot from the dried neutrals look that we often associate with the desert. I was reminded of the hanging gardens in the canyon walls that happen when water is seeping from the rock. We complemented the greenery and potted plants with the best of the May garden flowers in shades of blush, purple and reds: ranunculus, butterfly ranunculus, sweet pea, specialty tulips, agrostemma, alliums and nigella. We incorporated wisteria vine, hosta leaves and leaves from my house plants to provide the lush feel. My favorite ingredient were the garlic scapes from our hard neck garlic crop to provide funky shapes and movements to the table arrangements. All were grown on our farm or sourced from other growers via the amazing Pickling collective in Salt Lake City. We collected and potted up loads of succulents from our friend’s house plants and divided all of our own into little terracotta pots for the tables. Guests were encouraged to take a plant home as a memento of the day. Our friends in Salida, Colorado shipped us some gorgeous San Pedro cactus that they had grown in their dome from seed.
The florals were fun, funky and kind to reflect the laid back and sweet attitudes of the couple and their people. Even an epic wind and rain storm during the ceremony didn’t spoil these two’s day. The vendor team was fantastic, orchestrated and hand picked by Tellurian Events creating a really beautiful collaboration.
